If I were putting a luggage rack on, it would be for carrying luggage. I've considered some mods to my bike, since it has exactly zero capacity for such things at the moment, aside from me riding with a backpack. My car has more than adequate luggage capacity for any use I've put it to without having to go with external stores. An SL is a bit less spacious, so I could understand going with a rack if taking long trips, particularly with a passenger.
I would suggest keeping that third brake light. As one who has been rearended (with a $4,200 repair bill to show for it), I think a bit more notice to those behind you that you're slowing down is a good thing.
