Separating the wheel carrier from the spine!!!

Hi Guys
I thought i would spend my few days I have off renovating my wifes old 230TE that she loves so madly however... I am beginning to regret it!
Great article Skiier 3 9, but it left me concerned and confused a bit.
I have stripped down the whole area of the rear wheel. Brake calipers hanging, wheels sitting on the floor, Brake disc (rotor) carefully placed, hub nut is removed (Just) I drowned it in WD40 and walked away smuggly ha! returned about fifteen minutes later and hit it harder that Mike Tyson and off it came. BUT, now i have a real problem.. I cannot remove what i think you are referring to as the wheel carrier. I mean the actual part that the wheel nuts bolt in to. I have hit it with everything i can find of any sizeable note and it just sits there as though somebody welded it to the shaft. Can you confirm this can be removed on the car and slid off the splines. My aim is to simply replace the wheel bearing, (never done this job before) but it now looks like beirut in my garage and I/m not best pleased because my poor SL which was wintering in relative comfort is now outside the British weather!!
Help! Mayday! Need advice and valium fast.
Best regards
The Limie
