I dug around a little and found that if Benz had rebuilt this engine it would have the tag riveted to the block over the area where the original numbers were stamped. This engine does not have that tag.

I doubt there's an easy way to see what engine serial number this chassis had originally . . .

I'll be taking it down to the shop sometime soon so I can yank the engine and strip off whatever anybody wants, assuming someone doesn't want the entire engine.
