cooljjay, trans no (it's manual), diff yes (2.88), but since the noise didn't abate with the clutch disengaged, i don't think the problem was back there.

kerry, i think i'm going to rebuild the cluster to include an electrical movement rather than swap to the other OF housing. however, i agree. if and when i start it again i will record the sound. last night it wasn't going to happen.

ichris, will spin them by hand.
