Turbo-ing is easier on rods. Typically the highest load on the rod is at the end of the exhaust stroke as the piston reverses direction and starts back down. This wants to pull the rod apart, esp at higher RPMs. Backpressure from a turbo actually cushions the piston as its rising on the exhaust stroke taking away a little of the strain on the rod as it reverses back down the hole.

With the choke of a snail I have bolted on mine, it should never break a rod. I wouldn't be too surprised if I bent one eventually though.
