I think the situation may have some parallels to the transition from the pagan Roman Empire to the Christian Roman Empire in which singleness became a prime social model and monasteries developed to accommodate the people who adopted it. I'm reading a book about that transition at the moment but I'm not far enough into it to make an intelligent comment. Although, the book does focus on the connection of slavery and sexuality in the high Roman empire. So, it might be the case, that stopping the enslavement of women in marriage in Japan has produced a similar cultural movement awar from sexuality and marriage and towards a single life devoted to an institutional cause.
