I found out recently that some are designed for the wiring bundles for the two connectors to enter from toward the rear of the car - I presume these were from w126s originally? On my '85 it is clearly meant that the wiring bundles enter from the front. The relay I installed a couple of months ago is the opposite.

The difference, besides having to ply the wires to the other end of the relay, is that the cover ends up with the open end facing backward and up, and in the current extreme temperature swings we have had here, I found that water had collected in the recess around the connectors.

I have therefore been reading the info about differences in ventilation holes with interest, given the intermittent issues I've had, which have particularly coincided with the days when the temperature was flucuating a lot. I had also assumed the relay was a sealed unit....
My spare relay I think came from a W123, don't know whether the wire bundles came in from the front or rear. On my 85 wire come in from the front and relay mounted at an angle so water drains out instead of trapped. Strange you have one that is opposite??? Do you have a part number?

One way to find out if you have water in the relay without taking it apart is put it in a glass jar with a sealed lid under hot sun for a few hours. If it fogs it has water.
