I've owned my share of rusty Mercedes, so I can't knock Subarus for that, as a big reason for owning one is their popularity as snow-vehicles. But, with some exceptions, an inline-engine is generally the easiest configuration to service and repair.
A friend owns a 2004 turbo Subaru Forester, and it's engine is among the worst to service I've had the displeasure to experience.
