1985 190E 2.3 16V 5spd fuel economy

Its been a 2 months since I started driving this car on a regular basis ,was told to do so from a well known MB mechanic whos side passion is mid 80s ferraris. The odo and fuel gauge are not functioning ,the only savior is the idiot light which keeps me aware of low fuel .So ,long story short I filled up with 2 gallons of gas and took a mapped out coarse thru a local area to test the for its mpg ,not so good ,in the 14 mpg range. The factory rating for City driving on the euro 5spd was at 17mpg ,taking the age etc, etc, I might be spot on for the numbers ,When I let this car run I might only see 10 mpg, thats one thirsty 4 cylinder.Any tips on say 5 mpg gains ,keeping my foot out of it sure would help.Wires and cap look good, new plugs, injectors ,alternator is old ,put new regulator in last month that was toast, idles alitle high but nothing extreme.
