I'd keep that rifle as is, if you want a pretty one go buy a brand new M1A and you can put whatever stock you want on it. Typically restoring older firearms is a bad idea. One day I'm going to drop the money and have my FN49 restored to new condition, but that gun doesn't have any historical value to lose by doing so.
This generation of battle rifles were really the last of the battle field Rolls Royce's before cheap stamped guns took over and modern plastics came into use. The M1 series, FN49, SVT40, K43, and the Swiss STGW 57 which really is a Rolls Royce in terms of cost and machining.
