Oddly I have never, ever had a wheel bearing issue in any of the other Mercedes I have owned (since 1997), three of which were much higher mileage and two in decidedly worse shape than the pair I have now.

On my 85 300D, owned for 24 years and which has 429k km on clock, I have had one front bearing go and that at about 350k km. I had the drive shaft centre bearing go much earlier - probably at about 170k km. It made a roaring sound that reverberated through car. The wheel bearing much less noise and usually only when turning.
I have also had stuck calipers sound like a bad bearing or worse on my 72 and the 85.
