It's been many years since I had a 123, but doesn't it go to the bottom of the air cleaner? I vaguely remember that there was a nipple there for the hose connection.

Venting that line to the atmosphere is grossly polluting, and as you've discovered, does nothing to enhance the ambiance of the car.
