Nice story and good ending! From my research, the 6.9 does not have block cavitation issues (coolant leak into combustion chambers) of the 7.3 idi if incorrect coolant was used. Had to do with too little meat between cylinders when the 6.9 block was bored out.

What did you get for MPG on the trip? Not the 18 claimed in the ad?
