Generally speaking, the scale on parts in the cooling system are deposits from tap water...

Distilled water leaves no scale.

This may be the stuff a previous poster described as found in their water pump. My thoughts at the time is it seemed to built up in areas of temperature change instead of all over. White in color and it has some mass.
