I usually just use a channel lock to remove the sender. It's not in there very tight. All you need to remove to get access is the felt fabric at the back of the trunk. There are plastic snaps along the sides and the top hangs on hooks attached to the tank itself. Once the fabric is off, the sender will be right in front of you. Pull it out of the tank slowly: it's filled with fuel, and it takes time to drain.
VERRRY carefully pull the aluminum covering off. The sender is a float that rides between two hair thin wires. The wires get covered with varnish andn need to be cleaned with a qtip, solvent, and a light hand. Or just install a new sender.
