I remove the thrust piece with a slide hammer. There are two different size threaded caps on the thrust piece depending on year. I have one of each that I drilled a hole in to attach the slide hammer. Spare caps are easy to get at the salvage yard. A slide hammer removes the thrust piece with very little effort.

If you do it this way you can leave the oil pump and pan in place. However, if your thrust piece is really worn you may want to look at the pump anyway.

Once you make up a slide hammer rig for this you can easily pull a thrust piece at the salvage yard to see if pulling the gear set is worth the effort. If the thrust piece is badly worn then the gears are probably bad too.

Turbo engines have the same IP shaft as non turbo engines. The gear has nothing to mesh with and is therefore not worn. If it were possible to order just the oil pump drive shaft a used turbo IP shaft could be paired with it. I haven't found a way to do it since Mercedes sells them as a set. If anyone has a way to order just the oil pump drive shaft I'd love to know.

FYI there are three different IP shafts used on OM61x engines and the turbo engine has the last revision. It will only work on engines with a bolt securing the timing device. Earlier engines have a nut on the end of the shaft.
