It is cast into the cover. I agree with your comment on the 604 part number. However, the EPC lists it for the early 1990's 300SD (which is the 603.971 engine). When I reverse searched on that part number, it cross referenced the 601, 602, 603, and 606 engines. That makes me believe that it is backward compatible.
