My experience with cam retarding is accidental. It was on a gas engine and the new timing belt was installed one tooth off. The engine ran great but it lost all it's low end and came on like crazy on the top end.
It was interesting because it was a response like a 2 stroke hitting the power band. It was literally a dog down low and crazy on the top end. It would have been fun on a sports or a race car but not on this family sedan. Not sure the combination of the diesel's inherent low end power and cam retarding would live happily together.
