Teflon is only worth applying if you don't wax your car regularly. It will help protect the finish and keep it looking decent. It doesn't really give you the same shine and depth that a good wax will so in my opinion it's only for those that don' thave time for proper maintenance.
As far as abrasives go, waxes (Carnauba or Polymers) are not abrasive. Light Swirl removers (Meguiars #9, 3M) for the most part if applied by hand are also not abrasive, they just fill the swirls.
Polishes can be abrasive and the degrees of abrasives will vary. Some are so mild they barely remove anything (used for heavier swirls and light oxidation), others will cut into the clear coat very easily and should be used carefully.
