Pull up and angled to the right.

I did not understand it until I pulled the top off and saw how everything works together.

Also, find a long thin flat head screwdriver with a small head.
Bend the end of the screwdriver between a 45-90 degree angle, at it's closest point to the head or end of the screw driver. Bend the screwdriver so the head is flat with the angle. The thinner and smaller the head the better.

As the two people are pulling up on the top, a third person can go in there, to the left of the pin and "help" the latch over to the left. There's a hole just larger than the pin in diameter, so you need a thin long screwdriver to get just enough of the screwdriver tip in there to nudge that pin over. The latch only has to go over a 1/16 -1/8 of an inch or so, that is if the cable is just loose and not broken. If the cable was broken it would need more clearance. I have never read that the cable is broken only loose.

Now if you have seen the mechanism and you know how it operates, this is easy to understand, if not, it's kind of hard. At least it was for me. It wasn't until I got the top off until I really understood it. I hope, I helped a bit.
