Hes not getting 50mpg. Remember in the VW diesel world everyone adds 10 to 20mpg to what they tell people their mileage is. Just like a peacock expands its tail to appear larger and attract a mate, and just like how every mercedes diesel can run for a bazillion miles on sawdust and peanut butter with no maintenance.
Agree with above, your commute is electric car distance, not ideal for a TDI and would result in that reduced mileage. Take it out for a couple hour drive and see what it returns
Without expanding my tail feathers i can tell you the wifes passat gets 41 reliably with her 2 hour daily commute, and my work car 01 ALH 6 speed gets the same. If either of us could stay off of the throttle we might do better
