During the early 70's glycerin was the recommended treatment. It is gooey and goes on slowly so there may be better treatments. It is also expensive.

Also the original rubber compounds were made to respond to a treatment with glycerin. If you can find the specs on the replacement rubber you used you will very likely find a chemical that is made for the newer compound.
