Tried it again, and it definitely goes smoothly from Park to Reverse, but not in the other direction, Drive to Reverse.
Still wondering if the repair or replacement of the selector valve causing the Reverse anomaly can be accomplished thru the pan (when removed), or pulling of the transmission would be necessary.
Also, would it cause further damage to drive for a while by stopping, and re-starting in park to get to reverse.

The valve body can be removed with trans installed. You might want to flip your spare trans over, remove the pan, and introduce yourself.
The shut off & restart gambit should not cause any damage.
