Pressurizing the cylinders it is. I have a feeling this is all going to end with tearing the engine down. Kind of "If you give a mouse a cookie" story. I have $200 in the car so if it cost more to fix the engine than it is worth, at least my kids get see how an engine works. How difficult is it to find a decent used engine? The car is pretty rust free so i would hate to part it out, however it might be easier to just find another car. My oldest son turns 16 this year and I would love to have him drive a W123 for his first car. There is a lot of life in this one for sure.
