At the time it was new technology and for the reintroduction of diesel passenger cars to the US market, I guess MB wanted to use the
system for assured quick and easy starting in all climates! Lower emissions may have also been a consideration. The Beru plugs are
able to reach 1000C in under 2 seconds!

If anyone wants, I can email copies of the US E320 CDI's preglow system information from the FSM and the ISS brochure (PDF) from Beru.
