Yeah, the monument you are referring to is the statue of a famous Akita named "hachi". There is a bronze statue of the dog in front of Shibuya station in downtown Tokyo. I guess it was in the early 1900's, that a man and his dog, Hachi, would walk to the train station every morning, and the dog would see him off to work, and then walk back home. At the end of the day, the dog would walk back to the train station to wait for his master.
One day, the man died and didn't make it back home. His dog continued to wait for him to come home every single evening, until the dog died. A very sad story.
