You haven't provided pictures or a followup to tell any of us what's screwed up. Are the threads in the lock ring boogered up? I mean looking in there will tell you real fast... If they aren't, see if the lock ring itself is sitting cock-eyed. If it is, I'd suggest taking the head to a machine shop and having the issue corrected, you'll have possible other damage if it hasn't been locked down correctly.
