Just driving around town is unsafe because you cannot change directions quickly enough due to the muscle needed to turn onto a side street.

Absolutely agree with your decision.
About 8 years ago, my BMW E30 lost power steering function, a bracket that secured the pump to the block broke. No way to reliably turn the belt til I fixed it. I thought I'd try it without it and I did for about a year. Then I noticed I was having some persistent pain in my forearms. Not debilitating but I didn't want it getting worse.
I had originally thought going with forced manual would be good exercise. These days it's become a challenge for me to know what is good exercise and what is just more wear and tear and miles on the odo.
I finally remounted the pump. Much better. And it turns out that using a power rack with no fluid power is harder than using a pure manual rack.
