That's exactly what I did. I don't trust the timing pointer, it showed I was at exactly 15˚ATDC which is what the sticker on my radiator support says to time to, but the timing was still retarded a bit. So who knows what the actual timing is, but it's right now. Insta-starts, super smooth running, quiet idle with no more clattering, massively reduced smoke, and much better power in the higher RPM ranges. Results don't lie!

I polished the pits out with 2000 grit sandpaper, followed by heavy cardstock, then cleaned with denatured alcohol. The contact points are solid and not plated, so they can take a bit of dressing.
