My note above, especially addition of 2nd tank to 220D, related to the mid '70s after the fuel crunch of '73. Had a real interesting experience on a trip to Idaho back then to photograph the electrified portion of the Milwaukee Railroad. Had been carrying 4 five gallon cans in the 220D and it really came in handy on the way back. Never saw another open filling station after leaving Denver headed to NE Okla. Of course it was a Sunday.. last day before vacation ended. Eventually just got tired of messing with the 5-gal cans!! And as large as the trunk was in the 220D the little space lost was not missed.
