I bought and used a thread gage and as mentioned the outside diameter.

I have a Chamber/Caster Gauge that comes with a magnetic base. But, on my W123 with the aluminum wheels there is no place it would fit. The I saw that you could get separately adapters for go Carts that thread onto the axle.

So I made one on my Lathe for the Mercedes. It is a steel cylinder with one end drilled and tapped for the Axle threads and if I remember correctly threaded and tapped for the Chamber/Caster gauge.

They way it works is cumbersome because you have to remove the Axle Clamp Nut. So I simply screwed the adapter in till there was no play in the bearing. When I am done I had to adjust the bearing end play.
