I went with R129 500SL springs and 23mm pads, plus increased wheel and tire diameters and ended up with about 8" (200mm) total ground clearance on my rally W201, which has the same suspension configuration as the W124.
I also used the equivalent of the Bilstein B6 shock absorbers/struts to ensure full suspension travel with increased damping; DO NOT use the B8 sport package, as they are designed for a lowered suspension with reduced travel.
