I am not sure where ROLLGUY lives but if you live in the Los Angeles area you can be up in the mountains throwing snow balls and if the traffic is good in 1.5-2 hours driving be down sunning yourself on the beach.

Even if you are in the Desert it can sometimes be numbing cold especially in the morning or at night.

The mentioned Yes-High Desert can be numbing cold in the winter.

When I was a Kid with the Scouts we camped at this high desert place in Apple Valley at Dead Mans Point and we did not set up any Tents. When we work up in the morning we found out over night it hat snowed a little leaving a nice crust of frost on our stuff.
