Did you inspect the ignition coil?
On my 300E the contact point (copper "cup" where the wire makes contact), was corroded to nothing more than green powder. -Strangely enough it still started fine but had very rough idle.
Never criticize someone until you've walked a mile in his shoes. That way, when you do, you're a mile away -and you have his shoes!
