Put your foot down further, and check to make sure you have both the front and rear bushing in place -- if one is missing, it will upshfit too fast.

I'd not adjust the shift rod without the equipment to measure control pressure, it is possible on this tranny to over-pressure it with resultant severe damage by miss-adjusting the control rod.
