I'm not a sailor. I'm a driver, I'd drive the boat, but I do not need to get there in a hurry.
I would anchor the boat in a marina and have to pay the fees of course, but I am at this point where I don't have much to do. So I would drive to the marina and park the car, get on the boat, go visit someone in St. Louis, and come back a week later, or something like that.
Eat **** and sleep. That's it right?

You might want to charter a boat similar to what you think you might like for an extended trip, get a feel for the whole thing.
You drive the boat, you become a "sailor". You will be responsible for navigating, making sure you don't run aground, safe passage through bad weather (the great lakes can be just like the open ocean, from what I understand), proper operation of the vessel, etc. It's a lot of responsibility. I would far prefer to just relax and let someone else take on all that responsibility. But I do it anyway out of necessity as I use my boats too often to make chartering worth it. 40' is a lot of boat - my biggest is 23' and I would not want to manage anything much larger than that, but that's just me.
