Could be you're just being cautious, but it's not a bad instinct. Even without a serpentine belt, you might be hearing something like a worn belt tensioner, pulley, or maybe even the alternator bearing. If it runs well otherwise, keep an ear on it and see if the noise changes or gets worse.
