The car parts store sold me Permatex anaerobic, but google AI is saying Permatex Form-A-Gasket #1 or #2. I assume both are wrong, so thanks in advance for the help from this group! dave w.

Well for a long-time companies like Permatex and Loctite have made goop that is for feezed plugs.
Personal opinion.
Having started working on cars in the 1960's I used the old school brown thick hardening and non-hardening Permatex. Messy but totally reliable.
You need to sand the holes and if there is pits in the holes get the rust out of the pits. Spray or wipe on a rage with brake cleaner. Likewise degrease the plug and coat the hole filling in any pits and the plug also. The excess mostly ends up on the outside. Give it time to set. Even the non-hardening gets stiffer.
I personally give the edge to the hardening Permatex.
Another old school thing was to use brass freeze/core plugs. I have no idea if those are available for Mercedes.
