I'm assuming that the 240D uses the same setup that the 300D uses, but it's a semi-external regulator assembly. You can replace it with the alternator in the car, but it does go into the alternator somewhat, and the brush assembly is integral to the regulator.
It's also held in place with two bolts
so it's real easy to remove.
