Unhappy Wheel alignment question

Hi,
I took my 1996 E300 D in to Kauffman today to have an alignment done because the car pulled slightly to the right. They were able to make adjustments but said that the front camber was excessive and that they needed a camber kit. The cost would be $316.00 installed. I don't know much about this kind of thing and was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to if this sounds right. Is this kit something that permanently attaches to the car, or is it a tool used to adjust the camber? If I had taken it to the dealer to have an alignment done, could I have avoided this. Why isn't anything simple on this car?
