Not sure how the cam got out of time. The previous owner (I'm the 3rd) thought the original owner had some head work done for some reason. I'm guessing it was reassembled incorrectly. However, I thought about the tensioner, also. How do you diagnose that? I don't hear anything that sounds like chain rattle to me. Of course, I'm the guy who thought it was running pretty well when it was mis-timed.
The idea on the oil tube wasn't mine. I picked it up from Mitch Haley on the dieseltech list at mbz.org.
