Ted, you can search the internet and find some information on trimming nails on dogs. Trim just a bit off. Basically, enough is clipped off when the inside of the nail looks a bit moist. Regular clipping helps push back the "quick" as it's called. If it DOES bleed - don't panic. Put flour on it and keep the dog from walking around.
That said, I've given up on clipping my dog's nails. He's such a baby that he goes beserk and fights for dear life as though I'm butchering him when I try to clip his nails!
