Personally, from a diy'er standpoint (and next to the old diesels) I like the single overhead cam engine better but you do give up a little performance. To me the single overhead cam cylinder head job is easier. The single overhead cam engine is called the 103 series and the dual overhead cam engine is the 104 engine.
They both are prone to have headgasket leaks on occasion. The 94-95 cars are not in the group with the dampener problems but do have some wiring harness issues.
