I don't think any W116 was available with a 5-speed but the M110, M116 and M117 were available with 4-speed MTs for sure. The W116 300SD was a US (NorAm?) only car so those only had AT.

We coludn't have turbo diesels here in UK on W123, W124's because of the right hand steering column/box was in the way. But they were widely available in the rest of Europe. I guess MB thought it uneconomical to produce it for our market. Or maybe they thought we couldn't handle the power!!!

Most 123 diesels (including 300's)here are manual but the reverse is true of 124's.
