It seems to me that if the manual socket works, the cable must be okay, as the manual control does exactly what the motor does. If your motor is bad, a replacement costs around $350, plus labor. Although I haven't tried it, replacing the motor seems like it would be an easy enough DIY job. The difficult work is if the cable, bridges or cable housing need to be replaced (and yes, it is expensive).
