To answer your questions- I think Chevron Delo 400 (15W40) available at Walmart in 1 quart and 1 gallon containers is a very good Diesel rated oil.
For synethetics there are several good ones- Mobil makes a Delvac 1 which is a diesel Mobil 1. In our area I'm finding Motol(sp?) which is meets the new VW 505.01 (requirement for the 2004 VW diesels).

you'll find more oil advice in the archives than anything else!! Everyone has a reason why a different product is better=)
