Have had my 87 560sl at 120mph and could have gone faster. for me the real thrill is the take off excelleration, the 8 cyclinder grumble and the cornering. have hit some hairpin turns at 45mph that would be challenging in most cars at 30mph.
i agree with the fact that these cars can be a handfull at higher speeds if the g-forces are to the outside. my steering box could probably use to be replaced so i know that having the a little loss of control should be corrected quickly in these cars.
the thing is that all cars will go fast. my 300turbo diesle when realitively new would do 125mph and still have more to offer. Top speed is no challenge. its all about how it gets there i.e. how fast, how fun and who is trying to keep up with you. I love smoking these ratty little rice burners with their loud tail pipes and reversed baseball capped drivers, and doing it while tuning the radio or otherwise distracted as not show even a modicum of interest.
