I'm not familiar with the separator on your car, but their only function is to remove any oil droplets. They usually consist of a labyrinth that traps tiny drops, but lets gaseous material pass.

It's also possible that it's "empty" because something inside has come apart and disappeared into the engine.

See if you can order a new one and compare to the old.
