Safe Mode is usually accessed by hitting the F8 key just as ms windows starts to boot. There should be a menu of different boot options.

It might be good to do a full ScanDisc, including media test. Then after that, while you're in Safe Mode, you could probably run your other things too (virus, spyware checks, etc).
