While I can't say I really know from experience, I seem to recall one of these shows involving some guy declaring his love for another guy, live on TV. The other guy went home, got a gun and shot the first one, dead. So, while they may have scripts and added features for the sake of getting bored people to watch them, it seems that if they were all scams, they would be off the air due to liability issues.

I was subjected to an hour or so of a similar show last week when I had to report for Jury Duty. Some clever guy got up and declared CNN, which was on the TV at the time, was really the "Clinton News Network" and that he hated it and wanted to change the channel. It took him about 10 tries with the remote to accomplish that and he selected some talk/freak show. To my amazement, the Jury Duty Pool actually got together and asked to have the volume turned up!
